The Moment We Became Us

I see her walking toward me, back-lit—her image broken by the hand-bar that intersects the middle of the glass door. When our eyes lock, her face smiles tenderly and she is drawn to my side; first touching my yellow bow, and then stroking my arm. In her touch, I sense the warmth of her soul and her longing to be tethered. From our first touch, we become as one—instantly calming her raging fears and anxiety that had once colored her world silent.

The touch of her skin is warm, radiating through my body and awakening an innate and unfulfilled compulsion to comfort and protect. She holds me lovingly, releasing me from a still and lifeless existence into a living embrace. It is a beginning for us both—my breathing begins and hers slows to a peace she’s never known. Each of us different now; we emerge as one to conquer what lies ahead.

Our journey begins—the cold glass door closing and burying my lifeless existence forever—igniting a glimmer of hope within her heart. I can feel her fears softening as she grips me close and nestles her face into the fur of my neck. Her grip is long and tight, as if it might be the last, but we both know it is only the first. Neither of us could have guessed that such comfort in a chaotic world could come from only five books of Green Stamps.
